A 9-year-old girl headed to a grocery store with her family in Houston was shot in the head in a suspected road-rage attack, police said.
The girl was identified by her family as Ashanti Grant.
The girl was traveling in a Chevrolet Tahoe with her parents and 12-year-old brother when they saw two other cars racing on the Southwest Freeway at about 9 p.m. Tuesday, cops told KHOU.
As the family’s Tahoe tried to get out of the way, the vehicle somehow got in between the two speeding cars — prompting the driver of a white GMC Denali to open fire on the SUV, police said.
“They drove and started shooting into the Tahoe, and sadly enough, a little 9-year-old girl was shot in the head,” Houston police Lt. Ronald Willkens told the station. “We’re going to do everything we can to find these individuals.”
A man and woman were believed to be inside the Denali, which had distinctive arrow marks on its rear blinkers, Willkens said
The girl’s mother, father and older brother were not shot
The girl, who was in critical condition after being wounded, was in surgery Tuesday, Willkens said.
A police spokesman told The Post the girl remained in critical condition early Wednesday. The girl’s mother, father and older brother were not hurt.
After the girl was shot, the driver of the family’s SUV pulled over near a gas station, KTRK reported. Paramedics took the girl to Texas Children’s Hospital, where her condition was not immediately clear, the station reported late Tuesday.
