From guns to economy: THREE false and misleading claims made by Biden in his SOTU

President Joe Biden calling for unity, announced new measures against Russia after its invasion of Ukraine. He also claimed several domestic 'wins' in his State of the Union address on Tuesday evening, March 1. But are all his self-congratulatory claims valid?
MEAWW previously reported how Biden had a slip-of-the-tongue when he mistakenly referred to the Ukrainians as "Iranian people" in his SOTU speech. We also reported how the US President's 'fund the police' comment raised eyebrows, especially since the Democrats have always shown unconditional support for the Black Lives Matter protests and the 'defund the police' movement.
The following are three false or misleading claims the POTUS made in his hour-long speech on Tuesday.
'Repeal the liability shield. It makes gun manufacturers the only industry in America that can't be sued'
This statement is outright false, considering gun manufacturers can be sued. Meanwhile, there are several other industries in the US that are shielded from lawsuits owing to certain liability protections. Democrats, however, are aiming to remove a couple of unique protections the gun industry enjoys. For one, gun manufacturers cannot be held liable for the use of their products in crime, according to the 2005 Protection of Lawful Commerce in Arms Act. However, this doesn't mean they cannot be sued at all. They are still liable for a range of things like negligence, breach of contract in the purchase of a firearm, marketing practices, and damages due to defects in design, according to the Daily Mail.
In 2019, the Supreme Court allowed a lawsuit against gun manufacturer Remington Arms Co. after survivors and families of nine victims of the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting sought to sue the company partly responsible for the tragedy due to its marketing practices. The families secured a $73 million settlement, and the gun manufacturer is currently bankrupt.
'Our economy created over 6.5 million new jobs just last year, more jobs created in one year than ever before in the history of America'
This claim is misleading because the job growth in the US since Biden took office is mostly thanks to the job market bouncing back in its recovery mode after the Covid-19 pandemic. The country added 6.6 million jobs in Biden's first year, which is more than any year since tracking began in 1939. However, the President ignored the fact that the pandemic had caused the loss of 22 million jobs in two months. Furthermore, the job market had already started to rebound under President Donald Trump in the summer of 2020. Meanwhile, the US is still short of more than 2 million jobs in January 2022 as compared to where the country was when the pandemic hit. Biden's so-called gains still include a significant dip in the job market that is yet to recover completely from the pandemic slump, according to fact checkers.
'The American Rescue Plan is helping millions of families by 'cutting energy costs for families an average of $500 a year by combating climate change.''
This claim made by Biden is also false. While US citizens might see such savings by 2030, families will not immediately start saving $500 per year due to climate provisions in the American Rescue Plan, according to a third-party analysis by the Rhodium Group. The nonpartisan research firm analyzed how much greenhouse gas emissions the US could cut by passing clean energy legislation, introducing new federal regulations, as well as forcing states to pass new climate and energy bills. "Long-term tax credits, investments in energy efficiency and other factors cushion consumers from price increases associated with new standards and regulations," the Rhodium report noted, per the Daily Mail. "On a national average basis, households save roughly $500 a year in energy costs in 2030 in our joint action scenario."

US President Joe Biden delivered his first State of the Union address on Tuesday, March 1, in Washington, DC. Vice President Kamala Harris and House Speaker Nancy Pelosi sat behind him while he addressed the members of Congress and the country.
Apart from Lauren Boebert getting booed for heckling Biden during his speech, the president was trolled for mistakenly calling Ukrainian people "Iranians". Furthermore, the way Biden concluded his speech left people confused. Finishing an hour-long speech, Biden said, "God bless you all, and may God protect our troops. Thank you. Go get 'em!" Social media users were quick to comment on the moment and question it.
NBC News' Andrea Mitchell said, "There was a strange moment at the
end where he said, 'Go get 'em'. That was audible to the audience and
we're not quite sure what he means. I think he's talking about Vladimir
Putin and the bad guys over there, but it was an ad-lib that kind of
felt strange."
One user said, "I thought I hallucinated the last line of Biden's speech last night. I thought he must've mumbled, 'Get me out of here or get Corn Pop on the line!' But no. According to the PREPARED text he really did say: 'God bless you all & may God protect our troops. Thank you. Go get 'em'."
Another commented, "So, someone needs to ask Psaki what Biden meant when he ended his speech with "God Bless our troops. Go get 'em." Sounds like he is sending them to war." A third questioned, "Why did Biden end his speech with 'GO GET HIM' ??? Who is he talking about?"
While one user commented, "Biden ends his #SOTU speech with 'God bless our troops, go get 'em!' WTF is he talking about," while another asked, "'Go get 'em?' Joe Biden, what does this mean?" A third questioned, "What did 'Go get him' mean? Sincere question."
One user joked, "My thoughts are with the White House speechwriter whose closing statement just got replaced with 'go get em'!" Another tweeted, "Now I've got all this energy, but I've got no idea where to go nor get 'em. #SOTU." A third explained, "I believe it's like 'Go get 'em!' as encouraging Americans to get after it. But it would be bad ass if he ordered a raid on some terrorist tonight and we'll find out tomorrow 'they' got him. A la Obama and WH correspondents dinner."
One commented, "Guys, guys, Joe Biden didn't say 'go get 'em' or 'go get him.' He said 'go get xym.'" Another said, "Last line of Biden's speech: "Go get him" or "go get 'em"? And what the f**k is he talking about."

President Joe Biden's first State of the Union address on Tuesday, March 1, was met with lukewarm reviews across the political spectrum as it was married by gaffes and misleading claims. This was in sharp contrast to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy's rhetoric for the survival of his country amid the Russian invasion, which has garnered international praise and brought translators to tears.

We also reported how his Ukrainian counterpart, on the other hand, received a minute-long standing ovation in the European Union parliament after delivering a heart-rending speech.
"The 2022 State of the Union was a mediocre speech poorly delivered," The Week’s Damon Linker declared in an op-ed for the magazine. Meanwhile, Rob Noel, a speechwriter for former Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, told Fox News Digital that "the intro on Ukraine worked well enough, but boy did he move on quickly, and not to anything particularly compelling or new." He explained, "As a technical matter, the speech felt strung together and disjointed, with cram-ins and jumpy transitions. The substance amounted to a dry list of policy points like it was geared toward lawmakers in the room rather than people at home."
Viewers noted a number of glaring gaffes in Biden's speech. At one point, the POTUS appeared to mix up the citizens of Ukraine with the Iranians. "Putin may circle Kyiv with tanks, but he'll never gain the hearts and souls of the Iranian people," he said. According to Fox News, Vice President Kamala Harris noticed the error and was seen apparently mouthing "Ukrainian" right behind Biden. At the end of his speech, Biden declared "Go get him!" — right after heaping praise on the US troops — but no one knew who he was referring to.
Meanwhile, the President also faced flak from fact-checkers for a number of misleading or false claims he made during the speech. The Associated Press called him out for claiming "gun manufacturers [are] the only industry in America that can’t be sued, the only one." The agency noted that while gun manufacturers did have some legal protections from being held liable for crimes caused by misused of their weapons, they were liable to be sued for several other reasons. Meanwhile, The Washington Post noted how Biden's claims about job creation and deficit reduction were rather "misleading."
The mixed reviews for Biden's speech stood in stark contrast to the reception the embattled Ukrainian President Zelenskyy has been receiving as he rallied for his country and urged world leaders to cobble together enough international support for the survival of his people amid a devastating invasion by Russian President Vladimir Putin. Zelenskyy has become a symbol of bravery and resilience as he stands alongside Ukrainian troops and civilians.
Zelenskyy made a passionate appeal to NATO and the EU on Saturday, February 26, with one translator getting choked up toward the end of his speech and later apologizing for the same. Former CIA Moscow station chief Dan Hoffman said Zelenskyy "jolted the West out of its post-Cold War slumber." He added, "The Jewish comedian-turned-populist president that's a silver lining in these dark clouds. It's a stark warning to China and all the other dictatorships around the world."
Hours before Biden was slated to make his first SOTU address on Tuesday, Zelenksyy received a minute-long standing ovation from world leaders following his appeal to the European Union. Biden praised Zelenskyy and the Ukrainian people at his address, which took place shortly after. "From President Zelenskyy to every Ukrainian, their fearlessness, their courage, their determination, literally inspires the world," he said.
