Rep. Rashida Tlaib, D-Mich., said that Democrats must stand up to Republican's fascist take over
A congressional hearing with Washington, D.C., Mayor Muriel Bowser descended into chaos after tempers flared and a Democrat was slammed for a vitriolic exchange likening Republicans to fascists.
Progressive Squad member Rep. Rashida Tlaib, D-Mich., got in a screaming match with Rep. Byron Donalds, R-Fla., during a hearing regarding crime in the nation's capital.
The Democrat expressed frustration that the Republicans on the panel were painting Washington, D.C., as a crime-ridden hellscape. She accused them of trying to defame the city.
'You're not telling people the beautiful parts that you do see in the nation's capital,' she said.
The progressive also implored her party to stand up to President Donald Trump and Republicans.
'I think it's really important we need to stand up against this fascist takeover. That's not a bad word. It's a fact,' Tlaib said, having previously clarified she's 'attacking a process' not 'attacking people.'
Her accusation comes as leadership on Capitol Hill has urged members of both parties to tone down the extremist rhetoric following the political assassination of Charlie Kirk, a conservative commentator who many on the left described as 'fascist.' The shooter, Tyler Robinson, wrote 'hey, fascist, catch,' on one of the bullets in the rifle used to kill the Turning Point USA founder.
Donalds, immediately triggered by the progressive's accusations, ridiculed Tlaib's comments as 'insane.'

'She's going to refer to me, my colleague, as if we were from the Third Reich. It's insane. Do I look like a member of the Third Reich? To you, Ms. Talib,' Donalds inquired.
Tlaib then ratcheted up her tone screaming so loud that the microphones had a hard time keeping up.
The two were both shouting over each other, neither side wanting to let up.
Eventually the Democrat, raising her voice to a level seldom heard in Congress, screamed about a past scandal Donalds was implicated in.
'Please, you're the one taking your voting card and giving it to somebody!' the Michigan lawmaker said.
In February, Donalds caught criticism for handing his congressional voting card off to another member to cast a vote on the Floridian's behalf while he flew to California to appear on HBO's 'Real Time with Bill Maher.'
The Republican later said he would cooperate with any probe into the matter and that he believes it was acceptable by House rules. No House Ethics Committee investigation has been launched.
Back in the hearing room, Donalds berated Tlaib repeatedly for being 'way out of line.'

Republican and Democratic leadership has urged members to use less divisive rhetoric since Charlie Kirk was assassinated last week

Kirk's suspected assassin, Tyler Robinson, wrote 'hey, fascist, catch' on a bullet used in the TPUSA co-founder's shooting
The ruckus was later quieted down by House Oversight Committee Chairman James Comer, R-Ky., after about a minute of high-intensity screaming.
Donalds later wrote on X about the skirmish.
'It's been 8 days since a leftist assassin shot my friend [Charlie Kirk]. Just now, Rashida Tlaib just called us 'FASCIST' again. This rhetoric is wrong. This rhetoric is unhinged.'
'This rhetoric has inspired murder. We will not stand to be defamed,' Donalds wrote.
