The San Francisco Police Department fired an unnamed officer last month, citing "evidence of bias" as the basis. The Chief and the Police Commission both recommended the firing.
The officer's offense was referring to Muslims as "rag heads." There is no indication that the officer ever actually discriminated against Muslims in the performance of his job.
While this seems a bit much to me, I would like to point out that anybody who is engaging in this sort of behavior, whether by emails or on social media, is FUCKING STUPID and we don't pay cops to be stupid.
The officer pursued various avenues to rehabilitate himself, including Muslim outreach programs and volunteering for duty as protection for local Mosques. He got no traction. Life is hard and sometimes unfair.

I think the punishment is politically motivated.
