Doctor Bill Kirby was a urologist living in Auburn, CA in the foothills. He was also a member of the city council, which elected him mayor.
A couple of weeks ago he launched an on-line rant against President Trump. It was rather nasty. He compared Trump supporters to the Klan. The community is actually fairly conservative-libertarian and they were not pleased. The other members of the city council moved to remove him from the mayor gig and told him there was a fair chance he would be recalled. He left the mayor gig, but not his position on the city council.
He died Saturday in a crash while flying his own light plane. A passenger in the plane was only slightly injured. He had been a pilot for 11 years and was 72 years old. The crash occurred during daylight near the Auburn airport, but it wasn't clear if he was landing, taking off or just happened to be in the area when the plane developed trouble.
Strangely the Placer County S O and not the feds are the primaries in the investigation. There have been four crashes near the airport in the last year. (Amateur pilots are dangerous.)

I knew a gas station owner who's son built an experimental helicopter from a kit. He walked into the rotor and died. I didn't know that most light/kit aircraft do not require a pilots license.
