RARE CRIMINAL TRIAL IN VATICAN CITY

by Bob Walsh

The Reverend Gabriele Martinelli, now 28, has been convicted of sexually abusing a young seminarian, identified only as L.G., over a period of several years in a seminary located within Vatican City.  Martinelli was also a minor when the abuse started.  Another priest, Reverend Enrico Radice, was also charged as he was the rector of the Seminary and is alleged to have done nothing to stop the abuse which he knew was occurring.

The St. Pius X Youth Seminary is being moved outside of Vatican City.

The prosecution is asking for six years in custody for Father Martinelli and four years for Father Radice.  The victim was 13 when the abuse began and was slightly younger than Martinelli.  An investigation was conducted when the abuse was originally reported back in 2013.  It was essentially a white-wash and found no abuse was committed, even though there were eye witnesses.

A verdict is expected in October.
