The
Caldor Fire, which is much smaller than the Dixie Fire, is now getting a
lot more resources as there is real fear it will burn into the Tahoe
Basin which would be a bad thing in general plus very bad for the
tourist industry in both CA and Nevada. The spot fire on the north side
of Hwy 50 has now enlarged and merged into the main fire which is
burning mostly east towards Tahoe.
There
is a new fire, the Washington Fire, burning near Sonora and Jamestown.
Parts of Sonora have already been evacuated. It is not large yet but
is expanding and is very near a lot of homes and businesses. There is
also a Dept. of Corrections fire camp right there (which is severely
understrength due to "realignment") and a modest airport very nearby.
Both will help the support situation immensely.
Also,
just for fun, there was just a nasty industrial fire not far from my
house. A shitload of plastic packing containers caught fire and burned
at a packing operation and cold storage place. The packing containers
were stored outside, the building itself was undamaged. That means
there would have been little or zero chance for ignition from something
like a defective electrical device. Not good. Several hundred
thousand dollars in damages were done.
