The
Caldor Fire, burning between Sacramento and South Lake Tahoe, is now
about160,000 acres. The fire fighters are making a stand in and around
the town of Strawberry, both to save the town in general plus it is a
very convenient, strategic staging location for fire equipment. They
are also preparing to make a stand on the crest of Hwy 50 to try to
prevent the fire from getting into the Tahoe Basin. The fire is only
about 20% contained and now has the highest priority for people and
equipment. Many out of state fire fighting crews have been called in
and a great deal of air support.
They are setting back fires to try to protect Strawberry.
If
the fire moves more or less straight east it hits a lot of granite and
not a lot of green stuff. If it moves somewhat north or somewhat south
as well as east there is a lot of green stuff. The Tahoe Basic is a
huge tourist area and severe fire damage would be a major economic loss
for both California and Nevada as well as for all the poor buggers who
live in the area.
