THE PERILS OF PERSONALIZED LAW ENFORCEMENT

By Bob Walsh

Ruby Schwartz had a surprise when she returned to her car on Feb. 7.

On Sunday the Denver PD received a report of a stolen car.  They were also told the owner of the car had a tracking app on his phone and was tracking the car himself.

The car owner approached the car and the lead started flying.  The car stopped about 0.2 miles away with a 12-year old male in the car.  He died in the hospital from a gunshot wound.

The other occupants of the stolen car beat feet before the cops showed up.

No charges have been filed.  The cops are understandably very interested in knowing who opened fire first and whose gun shot the 12-year old driver.

I admit I don't know much about how policing works in Colorado.  I do know that in many parts of California the cops do not investigate stolen vehicle reports.  They will stop a stolen car if it lands in their lap but they often don't go out and look for them, even if they know where to look.

I carry full coverage insurance. It's just not worth shooting at my own car and possibly killing someone. If you shoot someone then you have to face a Grand Jury. If indicted, you have to pay a lawyer and they ain't cheap. Similar to the victim, I have my vehicles tracked with cheap devices that will let me know where they stop. Call the local auto theft unit direct and let them recover it. They get stats for recoveries which determines future funding. They call recoveries Ducks as in going Duck hunting. If you're lucky the thief will chop it or total it. Also, if you finance a vehicle, carry gap insurance. It's cheap. It pays the vehicle off. If you sell or trade the vehicle, you can get a full unused refund on the gap. Most folks don't know this and never cash in the gap coverage.
