There
is supposed to be a "peaceful demonstration" this weekend in Portland
by The Proud Boys. Information I heard earlier on Friday said that both
the County Sheriff and the head of the State Police told the mayor that
they would NOT be assisting the PD as the Mayor (who is also the
police commissioner) INSISTED that they abide by the local ordinance
banning the use of chemical agents against "protestors."
However,
later on Friday, news came out that the Governor, Kate Brown, declared a
state of emergency on Friday and placed the state police and sheriff in
charge of public safety within the city of Portland. The Governor has
said that Mayor Ted Wheeler supports this plan. She also has stated
that the SO and the State Police will use chemical agents if they
feel the use is warranted.
Clearly these two situations do not line up smoothly with each other.
The city has denied the Proud
Boys as parade permit but has said they will not attempt to prevent them
from holding their pro-Trump rally in a city park.
