Federal charges have been filed in Alaska against a 49-year-old man accused of phoning in a threat to a Los Angeles synagogue, the U.S. Department of Justice announced Monday.

A federal grand jury in Alaska returned the indictment Friday charging William Alexander with threatening to kill the congregants of a California synagogue, the DOJ reported.

The synagogue was not named in the indictment, and a message sent to a prosecutor in Alaska was not immediately answered.

The indictment alleges that on Nov. 1, Alexander called the synagogue and left a voice message threatening to “kill” its Jewish congregants.

Alexander is charged with making threatening interstate communications and intentionally obstructing and attempting to obstruct persons in the enjoyment of their free exercise of religious beliefs through the threatened use of force, according to the DOJ.

If convicted, he faces up to five years in prison, three years of supervised release, and a fine of up to $250,000, DOJ officials said.

The Los Angeles Police Department is helping in the investigation, according to prosecutors.
