Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel and California Attorney General Xavier Becerra intend to fight the Trump administration’s policy punishing sanctuary cities
Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel, President Obama’s former chief of staff, told local radio station WLS-890 that the city of Chicago will sue the Justice Department to keep it from withholding $3.2 million in crime-fighting funds as punishment for Chicago being a sanctuary city.
In the wake of last month’s action by State Labor Commissioner Julie Su making California a sanctuary state, uber-liberal California Attorney General Xavier Becerra is reported to be considering joining several city and county attorneys in a lawsuit against the Justice Department to keep it from withholding millions of dollars in crime-fighting funds.
Lawyers believe the withholding of funds is unconstitutional, arguing that only Congress, not the executive branch, has the power to regulate the distribution of grant funds.
Let’s hope the lawyers are wrong and that the courts will rule that sanctuary cities and states are illegal and not entitled to the funds Attorney General Sessions has threatened to withhold.
