About 15 months ago the dive
boat Conception caught fire in the middle of the night while at anchor
in harbor. A total of 35 died, 34 passengers and one crew member. Last
week the ships captain was indicted by the feds for manslaughter.
The
captain, Jerry Boylan, was indicted for "misconduct, negligence and
inattention" by failing to train his crew properly, failing to conduct
fire drills and failing to set a fire watch. The owner of the vessel,
Truth Aquatics, was blamed by the feds for poor oversight but was not
indicted.
The families of the dead have launched an advocacy group pushing for stronger standards for such vessels.
