The
formerly great state of California executed an emergency, no-bid
contract a while back with SKDKnickerbocker, a consulting firm that
advertises itself as being part of the Biden-Harris team. This contract
was for $34 million, for "voter outreach" during the 2020 political
campaign season in a project called Vote Safe California.
CA
Republicans criticized the Secretary of State (who is a hard-core
partisan Democrat) for the deal, but he insisted the firm could do it's
work in a non-partisan manner.
Following
the execution of the contract the State Controller, which actually IS
more or less nonpartisan, informed the Controller that they did not have
the legislative authority to expend this money. The Sec State
demurred, but the Controller was adamant in the NO position and
eventually shot an email to the Sec State that said basically "Fuck NO,
we ain't gonna cut a check for this shit." And they haven't, despite
the fact the invoices keep piling up. That total billed is
$34,221,672.17.
In the
meantime the Howard Jarvis Taxpayer's Association has filed a lawsuit
against Alex Padilla, the Sec State, and the Controller, Betty Yee, to
prevent the money from being expended.
Alex
Padilla is one of the chief contenders to get Kamala Harris' seat in
the Senate when she takes the VP Oath of Office (assuming of course
Trump doesn't actually win.
