The
California GOP convention has been taking place this weekend. The
membership of the full delegation is about 1.400 members with an
executive committee of 100. Things have not gone smoothly.
Even
before the convention started there was a rules change proposal that
would have allowed the executive committee, or maybe even a
sub-committee, endorse a recall candidate assuming the opportunity to do
so presented itself. However the proposal was withdrawn after it was
criticized by what is left of the conservative wing of the party in CA
as being a power grab.
There
is also a major squabble over attempts to censure Representative David
Valadao because he voted to impeach Trump. The person who submitted the
censure proposal, Delegate Erik Elness, asserts that he submitted the
proposal in the proper form and in a timely manner but he was later told
that it was "improper" and never even forwarded for consideration. He
is asking that the matter be brought to the floor today (Sunday) for
consideration by the convention as a whole.
The
CA branch of the party has a history of being unable to present a
united front. With the "top two" rule in CA elections this often
results in several Republicans running against one or two big name
Democrats in the primary. This often results in only Democrats being on
the final ballot in November. It is hard to win if you don't have any
names on the paper.
