ARVADA, Colo. — As investigators piece together what happened in Monday’s shooting in Olde Town Arvada, John Hurley of Golden is being remembered as a hero for stopping gunman Ronald Troyke.

It’s still not clear, whose shots killed Troyke, or Hurley. Autopsy reports are not yet complete. Investigators said they can find no previous connection between the two.

Troyke ambushed and killed Arvada Police Officer Gordon Beesley.

What a sad situation. I am familiar with this type of shooting where cops kill another U/C cop or an assisting individual. A long time ago a female U/C cop was killed on Bay Area Blvd by a responding police officer as she was try to gain position on a shooting suspect. It is a hazard that cannot be remedied.

True, but an off-duty cop would have probably been smart enough to NOT be standing there with the bad guys gun in his hands when the unis rolled up. Private citizens are often better shots than cops but are also often clueless about what to do after the bullets stop flying. Standing there with a gun in your hand, especially the bad guys gun, is one of the things you should NOT do.
