Anthony
Campo was, until Tuesday, the Chief of Police of Sheffield Lake, Ohio.
He just resigned. If you believe him you believe that the 33-year
veteran, 8 years as chief, though it would be amusing to leave a note
that said KKK on the desk of a black officer. The Chief placing the
note on the officer's desk was caught on video, which presumably the
Chief knew was operational. The desk was in the booking area. The
union representing the officers in the department sent a complaint up
the chain of command.
The
Sheffield Lake "Law Director" (whatever the hell that is) David Griggs
and Mayor Dennis Bring came to the chief's office and gave him ten
minutes to leave. They told him he was on administrative leave until
further notice. Chief Campo instead elected to resign immediately. He
earned about $87,000 per year as Chief. It is likely that by resigned
rather than being fired for cause he will maintain his pension, though
that is not a certainty.
The
officer has hired an attorney. It is unknown if he will file civil
action against the former Chief, or the city, or both, or neither. The
union has said they are satisfied with the prompt action by the city and
will not pursue the matter further from their end.
A senior sergeant, Shawn Corr, is now the Acting Chief.
I
find it hard to believe how any reasonable person would believe this
would be seen to be funny or in any way acceptable, but sometimes people
do really dumb stuff for no obvious reason other than "It seemed like a
good idea at the time."
