A
Hennepin County judge ordered the City of Minneapolis to obey it's own
charter and hire some more cops. The ruling was in response to a
lawsuit filed by eight citizens last year. The judge ruled that the
Mayor and City Council "failed to perform an official duty clearly
imposed by law."
The ratio
of 0.0017 officers per resident would require the city to maintain a
department of 730 officers. In April of last year the city had 743
officers, 92 of them were on long-term leave. They believe that, as of
June 1, they had 690 officers, including 46 on long-term leave.
The city says they do NOT expect to be able to comply with the judges order.
