Or Perhaps How Much Stupid Is Too Much Stupid?
by Bob Walsh
If
memory serves we promised the Ukraine that we would protect them if
they gave up the nukes they had when the old Soviet Union crashed. They
did. How did that work out for them?
We
promised all those poor bastards who were working for us in
Asscrackistan that we would protect them if everything turned to shit. I
realize that the last act of that tragedy has not played out yet, but
it ain't looking good for the Americans over there let alone the locals.
So,
are we collectively like the eight year old who promised he/she will
feed the puppy, walk it every day and clean up after it? The kid really
means it when it is said, but is a little short on delivery. Or a lot
short on delivery.
I can't
say that I think this current clusterfuck is an intelligence failure.
Too many people have said what would happen when we pulled out,
especially if we pulled out precipitously. Did they REALLY believe the
Taliban would all of a sudden start acting civilized? (Hope isn't a
valid tactical position.) Or did the decision makers really not give a
good goddamn?
Hell, there
are THOUSANDS of Americans still in country there. Our government does
not even have a decent idea of how many of them there are let alone
where they are. As of right now we are making no effort to go and get
them. PERHAPS the Taliban will let them come to the airport. Perhaps
not.
It is my understand
that it was Biden who specifically said "Shut down ALL the bases."
This included Baghram air field. We apparently just walked away from a
perfectly good, functioning LARGE air base in a defensible position, as
opposed to the Kabul airport, which is in a bowl in a built-up and is
not easily defensible unless you have a LOT of bodies to do the
defending.
I thought Biden was supposed to be a foreign policy wonk.
The
real question, however, isn't what is going to happen in the next two
weeks. It is what is going to happen in the next ten years. Why would
ANYBODY believe ANY promises we make from here on in?

No. Our promises are like Confederate money.
