US Vice President Kamala Harris and her husband, Doug Emhoff,
hosted over the weekend what is believed to be the first Passover Seder
at Number One Observatory Circle, the vice president’s official
residence.
While notable, that’s hardly newsworthy. Emhoff is Jewish, so it would have been strange had they not celebrated Passover.
But Israeli media noted a small detail in the celebratory photos they
posted to Twitter that quickly resulted in some trouble, if not
embarrassment for the Second Family.
On the Harris holiday table was a bottle of wine… from a Jewish settlement in the so-called “West Bank.”
The Psagot Winery in the Jewish settlement of Psagot north of
Jerusalem produces some of the finest wine in the Holy Land, winning
awards at several major competitions in Europe.
There is no official US policy against Jewish-made products from the
West Bank, unlike in Europe, where courts have ruled that “settler”
products cannot be labeled as “made in Israel.”
Still, a bottle of “settler” wine on the Passover table of the Vice
President caused many to wonder if the Biden Administration had shifted
its views on Jewish settlement of the biblical heartlands of Judea and
Samaria.
Harris posted a photo to Twitter of herself and her family at the
Seder table, though it’s difficult to read the label on the bottle of
wine.
Her husband, however, provided a better angle in a photo posted to
his official Twitter account. The Psagot label is clearly visible.
Harris and her boss, US President Joe Biden, have returned to
the polices of past administrations in that they do not recognize the
legitimacy of Jewish settlements in Judea and Samaria.
Former US President Donald Trump broke with that traditional stance. In particular, his Secretary of State, Mike Pompeo, repudiated decades-old State Department policy that defined Jewish settlements as a violation of international law. In thanks, Psagot named one of its wines after Pompeo, though we doubt that’s the one Harris had at her Passover table.
While the Biden Administration does not openly relate to Jewish
settlements as legitimate, it has notably not reversed the policy change
implemented by Trump and Pompeo.
A spokesperson for Harris later stressed that “the wine served at the
Seder was in no way intended to be an expression of policy.”
