YOU DO NOT HAVE A CONSTITUTIONAL RIGHT TO NOT BE CHASED BY THE COPS, AT LEAST IF YOU LIVE IN WASHINGTON

By Bob Walsh

Busy and angry young woman

Recently a passenger in a Ford F-150 called the county 911 system a bit after midnight on Route 27 in the Spokane Valley.  The passenger complained that she and the driver were being chased.  They were.  By the Washington State Patrol.

Trooper Ryan Senger spotted the truck speeding and weaving in and out of traffic.  Thinking the driver might be DUI he pursued.  The driver, Amanda M. Baporis, 28, refused to stop and in fact cranked it up to 100+.  Her passenger then called the patrol, expressing the belief that it was unconstitutional for the cops to chase her due to some restructuring of pursuit rules back in 2021.  Ms. Baporis was wrong.  The county switched the phone call to the state patrol.

The state patrol put out a spike strip disabling one of the truck's ties.  They ended up in a field, stuck on a berm.

At first the occupants refused to leave the vehicle.  Finally the driver and her two passengers decided to get out.  (Maybe they had to pee.)

The driver was arrested for DUI and attempting to evade.  There were open containers in the vehicle.  The passengers were released.  According to Trooper Senger it is not uncommon for drivers to use 911 calls to somehow shake off pursuit.
