There is a nice shiny "new"
pedestrian bridge over I-5 in Sacramento. It is there to connect two
sections of the Del Rio Trail. It has never been opened for traffic and
now appears likely to be torn down before it is ever open for use.
It
seems that the builder used sub-standard concrete and sub-standard
rebar in the construction. The damn thing is unsafe. Right now those
involved are looking to determine whose fault it is and what they are
going to do about it.
It
seems likely that the thing will have to be torn down and replaced. No
trouble there. Doing major demolition over ten lanes of I-5 shouldn't
be an issue, should it?
The
city has sent a letter to the contractor, Mountain Methods, rejecting
the bridge citing the use of materials not up to the requirements of the
contract.

Better to find out now before concrete begins to fall on the freeway.
