Betty White
NO,
it wasn't the actress. She died three years ago. This was a chicken
named Betty White. The incident occurred at the Oakvale Farm and Fauna
World at Salt Ash in New South Wales, Australia.
The
tourist in question, Peter Smith, reached over a wall into an
enclosure, snatched up Betty, concealed her under his shirt, walked over
and threw her into an alligator pond. She was immediately set upon and
eaten.
Several days
after the incident, which occurred in January, Smith went to the police
station and stated that he was the chicken thrower. He asserted that he
had done this in order to feed the alligator which he was worried might
be hungry. His lawyer, Bryan Wrench, added that hundreds of millions
of chickens are killed every year for one reason or other. The
magistrate, Kiralee Petty, was neither mollified nor impressed.
Smith
must return in November to face trial on animal cruelty charges. He
could face two years in the slammer and a fine of over $20,000.
Betty White was a surrogate mother for various endangered species chicks raised at the animal sanctuary.
