Nearly 20 percent of the 1.4 million new cases of coronavirus reported
between August 2 and September 2 can be traced back to the Sturgis
Motorcycle Rally held in South Dakota last month, a new study suggests.
The 80th annual rally, which saw in excess of 460,000 motorcyclist
enthusiasts flock to the small rural town of Sturgis from all over the
country, has since been deemed a 'super-spreading event' that's
responsible more than 260,000 COVID-19 cases.
The determination was made
by the IZA Institute of Labor Economics, who have also estimated that
the public health costs for treating patients whose infections are
linked to the event will around $12.2 billion. 'This is enough to have
paid each of the estimated 462,182 rally attendees $26,553.64 not to
attend,' the research institute clarified.
