I have a friend that is a liberal. I haven't spoken to
him in quite sometime. Then last week he called me wanting information
about the best handgun to buy for home protection. Now mind you, my
friend voted for Obama twice and was quite proud of it. He is for
Defunding the police and believes Bond Reform is needed nationwide.
I
gave him my opinion and suggested he take a gun safety course before
making a purchase. Then I asked him why? His answer: "I'm concerned
about the lack of police officers patrolling the neighborhood. Crime is
way up and I think I should be able to protect myself."
I
couldn't stop myself from admonishing him. I said, "Don't you realize
that your choices are part of the reason that crime is up?" "No. I'm
afraid of guns but I think I need one." So far, his car has been
burglarized twice. I told him to put up a 6' fence, buy a dog and
install cameras. He feels such measures will take away the historical
quaintness of his home.
He
believes social services will take up the void left by limited police
resources. He lives in a shitty part of the city because he and his
neighbors are revitalizing the hood with gardens and power washing
sidewalks. A police officer has spoken to them about crime prevention.
In the mean time, criminals who have never been to a neighborhood
meeting are stealing anything that isn't tied down. The DA let's them
walk and they come right back to the hood.
