14-YEAR-OLD MURDER SUSPECT DECIDES TO THROW THE DICE

By Bob Walsh

Ashley Smylie, Carly Gregg

Carly Gregg is pictured in court on April 16, 2024 together with her mugshot (right insert) and her mother Ashley Smylie (left insert).

There is no doubt that Carly Gregg, of Brandon, Mississippi, who was then 14, killed her mother and attempted to kill her stepfather in March of this year.  She was offered a deal of 40 years if she copped.  She ain't gonna do it.  If found guilty of murder, attempted murder and various lesser crimes she could get 93 years as a guest of the people.  Prison in ol' Miss ain't nothin' nice.

Gregg shot her mother, Ashley Smylie, who was a respected high-school teacher.  Apparently mom confiscated some stuff from Carly's room and Carly didn't like that, so........

Carly's lawyer has argued that she was "compromised" by a change in her anxiety-depression medication just a few days before her murderous acting out.  He also asserts that she has experienced auditory hallucinations since being locked up.  She is scheduled for a psych eval soon.  Her trial is scheduled to begin in about three weeks.  She is being tried as an adult.
