GOVERNOR SIGNS, NRA SUES

by Bob Walsh

Rick Scott, Governor of Florida, signed the bill that reached his desk in the aftermath of the Valentines Day school massacre. This law, among other things, raises the legal age to buy a long gun from 18 to 21. Hours after the signing the NRA filed a suit in federal court.

The bill also enacted a three-day waiting period for the purchase of long guns in Florida and bans "bump stocks." It also enacted what is called The Guardian Program which would allow schools to arm some employees.

The Broward County teachers union supported the bill in general, but opposed the portion of it that would allow teachers to be armed. The bill does not REQUIRE that teachers or other staff be armed. They are attempting to get the governor to veto funding of the Guardian program to effective disable it.
