ON THIS DAY IN HISTORY

by Bob Walsh

In 1813 a fleet of nine U. S. ships under Commodore Perry defeated a fleet of six British ships to take control of Lake Erie.

in 1855 Sevastopol capitulated after a one year siege during the Crimean War.

in 1963 JFK Federalized the Alabama National Guard to prevent them from being used to enforce segregation in the public schools

In 1967 the denizens of Gibraltar voted to remain a British dependency and NOT join Spain.  (Probably a smart move on their part.)
