MY HOME TOWN

By Howie Katz

My hometown of Houston is hard to describe.  All I can say is that I am a proud Houstonian despite how journalist Hunter S. Thompson described the city.

Here is Thompson's description:

"Houston is a cruel, crazy town on a filthy river in East Texas with no zoning laws and a culture of sex, money and violence. It's a shabby, sprawling metropolis ruled by brazen women, crooked cops and super-rich pansexual cowboys who live by the code of the West -- which can mean just about anything you need it to mean, in a pinch."

I think Thompson's description is overly generous, in the top 5 armpit places in the U.S. for sure.

@ Gary...Tells you something about Mr. Katz then, doesn't it?

Gary, I think you're close. However, it used to be an armpit, now it's a shithole on a mosquito infested, polluted bayou filled with bodies in stolen cars that the city is aware of but will not spend the money to clear the cases by winching them out of the muck. (over 200 at last count) So, cruel is an apt description of the city. It is littered with sex clubs run by low life's. The city has been described as hot, humid and prone to floods and other disasters. Crime is awful and murder is way up. If you want to get killed all you have to do is honk at someone for changing lanes without using a blinker. Houston has the distinction of being the main drug distribution hub in the US by DEA. I used to work the night clubs that were protected by Houston Cops that the vice unit didn't touch. I got off a airplane last week at Hobby and the couple in front of me said, "What's that smell" as they exited the baggage claim. That smell was Houston.

Sounds a lot like Stockton except for the zoning laws.
