If my recollection is correct Yamamoto thought the war was not a great idea. He believed that Japan could not win a protracted way against the U S and that their only hope, which was not a large possibility, was to damage the US so badly so early that the people lost interest in pursuing the war. The SNEAK ATTACK on Pearl Harbor put that hope into the crapper. Back then the concept of destruction of the enemy and unconditional surrender was the American mantra. We no longer even attempt to destroy our enemies. We often don't even acknowledge we have enemies.
