Until Tuesday there were 17
inmates awaiting execution in the formerly great state of Oregon. On
Tuesday Governor Kate Brown commuted all of those sentences to LWOP.
In her official announcement Governor Brown stated that the "victims"
of execution experience "pain and uncertainty" as they wait sometimes
decades for execution. She further asserted, "My hope is that this
commutation will bring us a significant step closer to finality in these
cases."
She didn't express any concern on the pain and uncertainty the
murder victims may have felt while they were being murdered, but I
guess that doesn't matter so much to her. She also didn't get real
specific about how commuting their sentence brought their cases any
further towards finality.
