PETER KING IS NO JOE McCARTHY

Peter King, the conservative New York congressman, is chairman of the House Committee on Homeland Security. Today he opened hearings on the threat of homegrown Muslim Jihadists. Even before the hearings ever started, he was excoriated by Muslim groups and by the politically correct liberal crowd for preparing to conduct a witch hunt against Muslim-Americans.

King’s enemies are comparing him to Joe McCarthy. The late Sen. Joseph McCarthy was a Marine Corps veteran of WWII and a patriot. However, his patriotism was misguided as he searched for Communists in government and in Hollywood with reckless abandonment. His slash and burn tactics of guilt by association earned him some well-deserved condemnations.

Peter King is also a patriot, but he is no Joe McCarthy! He has good reason to hold the hearings for which he is being excoriated. There is ample evidence that a growing number of Muslim-Americans are being successfully recruited by Imams here and abroad for Islam’s war against the West and the U.S. The Fort Hood shootings and the Times Square bomber are two examples of the threat that we are facing from homegrown Muslim terrorists.

King’s enemies are calling him a hypocrite because years ago he was a strong supporter of the Irish Republican Army, the terrorist group that attacked British troops in Northern Ireland and slaughtered civilians in both Northern Ireland and in Britain. But unlike Islamic terrorists, the IRA never carried out any attacks against the U.S. and they never threatened to do so.

Not mentioned by his critics is the fact that King was lauded by Bill Clinton for acting as a key intermediary in the negotiations that led to a peace agreement between the IRA and the British. Making an issue out of King’s past ties to the IRA is much to do about nothing.

If anyone is to be condemned in this matter, it should be the Muslim and liberal groups that are attacking Peter King. This patriotic congressman deserves our praise and support!
