Earlier
this week SCOTUS ruled, 9-0, that persons in the United States as
humanitarian refugees and who entered the country illegally do NOT have
the right to apply for permanent resident (Green Card) status.
Federal
law now specifically prohibits people who have Temporary Protected
Status from seeking permanent resident status. There are right now
about 400,000 people with this status in the country. Their status
protects them from deportation and they are allowed to work legally.
These people however were never formally admitted to the country under
immigration law. Some of these people have been here for 30 years.
A bill to change this law has passed the House but faces an uncertain future in the Senate.
