Happy Birthday America
The United States of America is a wonderful country. It
is (relatively) free and relatively open. We have managed to survive
the occasional grotesquely incompetent government, and will no doubt
survive more of them. We have been a functional democratic republic for
very nearly 250 years. We are flexible enough that when the first
go-around didn't work (the Articles of Confederation) we were smart
enough to recognize it and flexible enough to do something about it. It
is possible to amend out basic our basic law, the Constitution. It is
not easy, but it can be done. The founders recognized that this might
be necessary and arranged for it to happen if needed.
People
risk the wrath of the law and their own lives to come here from all
over the world. We are still the land of opportunity. A smart person
with a good idea can make a buttload of money more or less honestly.
We have our flaws. We try to recognize them and change them as we go. Mostly we manage to do so, sometimes at great cost.
There
are other places on the planet that are decent, tolerable places. Even
nice places. I still can't imagine any place I would rather live.
Hooray for us. We are the good guys, and I strongly suspect we will continue to be so.
