Drugs prescribed in the doctor’s office prevent people from being hospitalized
While Harry Dunne, a former state police official, and I were arguing politics, the subject of hospitals came up. Harry’s wife is a nurse and so is my son’s wife.
Hospitals have sprung up like weeds all over the Houston-Galveston area. Many of these new hospitals are branches of hospitals in Houston’s world famous medical center.
At the same time, hospitals in the medical center have announced layoffs. So far this year, Memorial Hermann has announced 460 layoffs, M.D. Anderson Cancer Center 778, and St. Luke’s 810. There have also been layoffs at hospitals not connected to the medical center.
Harry says he knows the real reason behind these layoffs. He says hospitals are getting fewer patients because of modern medicine. In the past, cardiovascular diseases and many other illnesses could only be treated in a hospital. Nowadays, many illnesses can be treated through drugs prescribed in the doctor’s office. No need to go to a hospital.
Of course, no one wants to be hospitalized. The other day I was watching an old episode of “Walker, Texas Ranger.” When Walker found his Indian uncle bleeding from a head wound, he told the injured man he was going to take him to the hospital. The Indian replied, “No hospital, people die there.” Or as Tonto told the Lone Ranger, "Kemo Sabe, no doctor, him also undertaker."
Modern medicine is painful to hospitals? I think Harry has got something there.
