Authorities in New York did a 24-hour flip-flop regarding
the carrying of firearms by off-duty peace officers on the grounds of
the New York State Fair.
On
Tuesday the N Y State Police informed various police departments in
central New York that off-duty officers were no longer allowed to carry
weapons into the state fair. This was allegedly due to new weapons
detection machinery at the main gates.
The
policy was reversed about 24 hours later. The Onondaga County Sheriff
asserted "I think it's always best if you have more law enforcement
present, whether off duty or on duty, than less." It seems that Sheriff
Conway gets it.
It is
believe that law enforcement will enter thru a dedicated gate so as not
to disturb other entrants with constant triggering of the metal
detectors.
Non-peace officers are still not permitted to carry on the grounds even if they have a CCW permit.
