CA ANTI-TAX INITIATIVE GAINING STEAM

by Bob Walsh

The formerly great state of California has a very active direct democracy process. This process makes is fairly easy to get a proposition onto the ballot for the people to vote on. This is what gave us Proposition 13 tax relief and the 3-Strkes laws.

There is currently an initiative gathering signatures that would make it much more difficult for the rapacious asswipes in the legislature to steal more of our money. This change, if enacted would require either 2/3 vote of both houses of the legislature or 2/3 of the voters to enact a new tax or increase an existing tax. It would also REQUIRE that targeted taxes not be diverted and must be spent for the specified purpose. (i.e. a library tax must be spent on library services, a road tax must be spent on road maintenance or construction.)

A major backer of the new initiative are large soda companies, who are tired of being the whipping boys for every two-bit jurisdiction that wants to either raise some money or alter people's behavior "for their own good."

I hope it passes. I signed it myself on Saturday at a local gun show.
