The legislature of the formerly great state of California is proposing a new tax on firearms and ammunition.
Assemblyman Jim Cooper (Democrap-Elk Grove) has proposed AB2497. This bill, if approved would create the School Violence Protection Fund, which would be funded by the proposed tax. This fund would supply funding for school counselors at middle schools and high schools throughout the state.
The proposal does not, at this time, specify an amount of tax or if it would be a direct sales tax or a tax on individual retailers. Cooper stated when questioned about the proposal that, "It sickens me to think about all the kids who have lost their lives in the school shootings that are plaguing our country. Arming teachers is not good public policy and should not be considered." He fails to state how his proposal would accomplish this goal.
