Detroit Judge Kenneth King, who cuffed, berated sassy, sleepy teen on courtroom field trip, is suspended and will undergo training
Kenneth King is a judge in the 36th District Court in
Detroit. There was a school group, including an unnamed 15-year old
girl, in court this past Tuesday. They were there being sponsored by
The Greening of Detroit, a non-profit environmental group.
The
judge got pissed when the girl nodded off in his court and warned her
that if she feel asleep again in his court he would "put her in back"
(lock her up in one of the detention cells). She did. He did. She
was changed into jail clothes, handcuffed and tossed into a cell. The
judge asserted that he did not like her attitude and threatened her with
actual time in juvenile detention just before letting her out.
Judge
Allyah Sabree, who is the #2 in the pecking order at the court,
released a statement two days ago asserting that King's conduct failed
to reflect the standards of the court.
Kind
has contacted the girl's parents and offered to mentor her. It is not
clear what reply, if any, the parents made. I know what reply I would
have made. It would not have been particularly polite nor respectful.
The judge has been suspended and will undergo training.
