David Anthony Vargas, 16, of Orange County, Florida,
ain't never gonna make it to 17 because he is dead. His cause of death
is being stupid and hanging with stupid friends.
He
came up with a handgun from somewhere, almost certainly illegally due
to his age, and brought it into his home. He was goofing around with
his girlfriend and a buddy posing with the gun. During one of these
sessions the GF pointed the gun at David and pulled the trigger.
Whoops. The girl is now under juvenile detention facing charges of
aggravated manslaughter of a child.
He
is variously described as "joyful" and a young man who "brought
laughter, happiness and light into every room he entered." That may
even be true. It is a shame he didn't also bring some caution or
intelligence along with him. The parents and surviving five siblings
are understandably quite broken up over the incident.
If
you are going to own a gun, no matter how obtained, you should at least
figure out how to unload the damn thing before posing for pictures with
it. The cost of failure to do so can be very, very high.
